It was Mark’s birthday and the four of us threw him a private party, I sat a big box in front of him and told him to open his gift. He slid forward until he was sitting in close proximity to the box. He reached for it, somewhat apprehensively. As his hands worked at removing the lid, he glanced somewhat nervously up at the girls on the sofa, and over to MaryKate, standing a few feet away. Slowly he managed to work the lid off, glancing from one pair of mischievous eyes to the next. The lid seemed to pop off almost all at once. The lid still in his hands, Mark stared into the box at his birthday “gift”… and a half dozen emotions scurried through his brain at the same time. He froze there, surprised, mystified, flushed with excitement…
The box was empty except for something that immediately got him aroused. The bottom of the box had been mostly removed, one long, large hole at it’s center. Poking through that long hole were three cheerfully wiggling pairs of feet, belonging, of course, to Kira, Justine and April. Mark stared at the playful feet, his face getting more flushed by the second. The girls, including MaryKate, laughed with glee at Mark’s embarrassment, but more so at his poorly hidden excitement.
No longer needing the ruse, the three on the sofa flung off the blanket covering their legs. It had only been there to hide the fact that their legs went into the bottom of the box. They watched as Mark fumbled for words, stammering out feeble protestations, and looked totally flustered… but was smiling all the same.
